The following statistics were released in the 2010 Nebraska Risk and Protective Factor Survey. This study assessed alcohol and drug use among Nebraska students in grades 6, 8, 10 and 12. The results detail the prevalence of underage drinking across the State. The survey reveals:
►the percentage of Nebraska teenagers reporting alcohol use: 6th graders:14 percent; 8th graders: 28 percent; 10th graders: 49 percent and 12th graders: 68 percent.
►that 12 percent of Nebraska high school seniors reported drinking and driving.
►a near equal number of Nebraskan underage girls and boys drink alcohol.
Spend time together. Just minutes of quality conversation with your teen each day reduce the chance your teen will turn to alcohol.
Dine together. Teens who regularly eat as a family (five to seven times per week) are 33% less likely to drink alcohol.
Keep the conversation going. You protected them when they were young, protect them from alcohol now.
Guide them. When parents encourage teens to stay away from drugs, teens are 42% less likely to use them.
Stay close. When parents stay close, kids stay alcohol free.
Let them know how you feel. Parental disapproval is the #1 reason teens don’t drink.
